    Writer's Block: Music for Thought

When you have to study or get work done, what music (if any) do you put on to help you concentrate?

    View 506 Answers

I like this question, but am not sure how best to answer it. I guess, like any other time of day, what I listen to when I work depends on my mood. Sometimes I just need something relaxing for background noise like sky fm solo piano. Other times Ineed something loud and obnoxious like alternative rock. Sometimes, I need to concentrate in a completely silent, distraction-free environment. Most of the time, I find myself listening to a variety of web or mainstream radio: top 40, "hot AC", anything that plays a good mix of music. One of my favorite things to do is to create playlists in digital jukebox of my current favorite songs and shuffle through that while i work or do cleaning.

    free to be me
Heres another song that I find to be very uplifting and inspiring. it makes me happy.
Francesca Battistelli — Free To Be Me lyrics
At twenty years of age I'm still looking for a dream
A war's already waged for my destiny
But You've already won the battle
And You've got great plans for me
    Though I can't always see

Cause I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
    But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on Your shoulders I can see
    I'm free to be me

When I was just a girl I thought I had it figured out
See my life would turn out right, and I'd make it here somehow
But things don't always come that easy
And sometimes I would doubt, oh...

Cause I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
    But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on Your shoulders I can see
    I'm free to be me
And you're free to be you

Sometimes I believe that I can do anything
Yet other times I think I've got nothing good to bring
But You look at my heart and You tell me
That I've got all You seek, oh
    And it's easy to believe
    Even though

Oh, I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
    But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on Your shoulders I can see

I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
    But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on Your shoulders I can see
    I'm free to be me
And you're free to be you

    whereve I been?
tried to post this via AIM through ping fm. it shows on my ping fm site but not on lj. so much for convenience. heres what I tried to post. watch it appear later then I'll have duplicates.

    whereve I benn?

This is the first time ive been home in 3 weeks. working out of town. in fact I'm just here to do paperwork this week then back out again. then there was my cousins wedding; it was a nice outdoor ceremony. my poppy died on June 15 and we went to his funeral. poppy's hobby was racing pigeons so when they buried poppy, they released one of his white pigeons. That was cool. this pigeon had been gone for 2 years and came home the day poppy got out of the hospital. it made it back home again 2 days after the funeral. I guess thats poppy's special pigeon. Dad came and got me at the cemetery and showed me my twin brother's grave. that really meant a lot to me. glad to be home again even if it is just for a week. guess thats all.

if today was your last day by nickelback
I havent posted song lyrics in a long time but I wanted to share this song with you: if today was your last day by nickelback. I find its lyrics and message to be very positive and thought-provoking. Here are the lyrics:
My best friend gave me the best advice
He said each day's a gift and not a given right
Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind
And try to take the path less traveled by
That first step you take is the longest stride

If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last
Leave old pictures in the past?
Donate every dime you had, if today was your last day?
What if, what if, if today was your last day?

Against the grain should be a way of life
What's worth the price is always worth the fight
Every second counts 'cause there's no second try
So live like you're never living twice
Don't take the free ride in your own life

If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past?
    Donate every dime you had?

And would you call those friends you never see?
    Reminisce old memories?
    Would you forgive your enemies?
And would you find that one you're dreaming of?
Swear up and down to God above
That you'd finally fall in love if today was your last day?

If today was your last day
Would you make your mark by mending a broken heart?
You know it's never too late to shoot for the stars
    Regardless of who you are

    So do whatever it takes
'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life
Let nothing stand in your way
'Cause the hands of time are never on your side

If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past?
    Donate every dime you had?

And would you call those friends you never see?
    Reminisce old memories?
    Would you forgive your enemies?
And would you find that one you're dreaming of
Swear up and down to God above
That you'd finally fall in love if today was your last day?

    random entry
the other day, midproject, I needee to open up the pack of blank cds that I got for christmas. and my computer wouldnt read them. turns out they were dvdr's. how annoying. of course I cant hope to return them as I dont know where mom got them from and I took the shrink wrap off and put about 5 of them in my pc in an attempt to read them so... my neighbor ran me to walmart yesterday where I picked up a spindle of cdr's with which to continue my project(s). in the last few weeks i figured out how to configure my audio settings so that I can record or others can hear my computer and my microphone simultaniously. found out that twitter is having some sorta database problem that causes random twits not to display on ppl's timelines and the twitter status page assures us they are working to solve the problem. ready to see spring; tired of this cold cloudy weather. guess thats all the random stuff I got for today; think I'll go fix lunch.

    blip fm and twitter
I discovered a web site yesterday. blip.fm lets you search for songs then "blip" them, or send links to twitter, lj and other social networking sites. been testing it out with system access and jaws and its fairly accessible with both but I have yet to find a consistent method for using the site. It has potential though. but something strange is happening with twitter. as of yesterday my twits will post but a few hours later they just randomly disappear into thin air. at least 2 ppl I follow have mentioned the same thing happening to them. I started keeping track of my # of updates this morning and the last twit would have made it 267. the # of updates says 267 yet a twit, actually about 6 or 7 twits are missing from my timeline. they showed up when I posted them cause I copied them from twitter into a jarte document but then they disappear a few hours later. I think I will stop updating twitter till this problem gets solved.

    iron chef
I know at least a few people are curious as to the outcome of our family "iron chef" competition this past weekend. about twice a year we hold an iron chef competition in which everyone has to make a dish containing a certain ingredient or following a given theme and we all judge each others' dishes. the prize is usually a t-shirt. the theme for this one was "sweet and savory". this time I actually participated and made a chipotle chex mix which tasted good but came in last. mom and john submitted "pig balls" (pork and ham meatballs in some sorta sauce) and corn fritters. they'd have had a better shot if they had just submitted the corn fritters. cousin c made caribean shrimp with pineapple which was my favorite dish. cousin m made a blueberry lemon cake, my 2nd favorite dish of the competition. nephew made soft s'mores (crescent rolls with marshmallow and chocolate). friends d and j made scallops in appricot sauce. my sister won with her "McGrittle Brittle": peanut brittle with bacon.

1st day of volunteering| So today was my first day volunteering at the blind school. It went very well. A few quick sentences to sum up my day: Lesson learned: tell the paratransit I need to be there a half hour before my start time instead of 15 minutes; they got me there late this morning. Turns out I didnt need any additional tests; yay! Worked at the blood drive handing out refreshments, t-shirts, and stickers. We were given lunch: cafeteria food, but it was nice to have lunch anyway. I didnt mind waiting for paratransit in the warm weather. Its great it was nice enough to sit outside in february. Started learning a few new songs while I sat outside on my balcony.

[continuing on] sometimes I forget to put the relevant codes to ping fm so updates intended for twitter wind up in lj or duplicate on friend feed. also installed and configured miranda with the help of truthobjective and though it is not intuitive and very time consuming to set up I do like it now. in fact, on the rare occasion that I use windows live I find myself trying to use miranda commands. and customizing sounds is nice. oooooh! [oops!] oops hit enter too soon; meant to hit an apostrophe. as I was saying. When Explorer gets home, I'm sure she'll bring my missing groceries by. glad she got it and it wasnt left laying at walmart. Also among my purchases today were a swiffer mop and a vacuum sweeper. I have a full size vacuum, but its cumbersome and I have trouble controlling it, so I figured I'd do my day to day vacuuming with the sweeper. I really dont like shopping at walmart and dont think I'll go back for awhile. Today wound up being very productive and everything went smoothly transit wise. Currently watching the playoff game between the titans and the ravens. Go titans! In case your curious about the recent posting errors and strangeness in posts, I signed up for ping fm and friend feed recently which together are helping me manage my ever growing list of twitter/lj friends and other relevant blogs. ping fm will let me update any or all of my networks from instant messengers and sometimes I forget to put in the relevant

[update] I had every intention of doing a christmas/birthday update but never quite got around to it. Christmas and birthday were both good and I enjoyed spending time with my family. Got a lot of nice stuff, including a new karaoke machine, luggage, and digital jukebox software. Things are still coming along in my new location; got my paratransit card the other day. ordered a book of transit passes online, got those in the mail today. Went to walmart this morning; first time using the paratransit card. Transit went very well. However, our shopping assistant sucked. Believe it or not, she'd never heard of Velcro so I had a hell of a time finding that, and forget about finding labeling tape; she handed me scotch tape, scrap book tape, anything but... so I gave up. and when I got home, I realized I was missing a whole bag of groceries which included the Velcro I worked so hard to find among other things. Fortuneately my friend Explorer who went shopping with me had gotten that bag, so Ishe'll

    nostalgia
I'm writing this here cause I dont think anyone would want to hear me ramble about this. Whether you read it is your choice. This christmas season, I find myself wishing I had the old records and cassettes I used to listen to every year at christmas as a kid. So I've spent a lot of time in recent weeks finding and acquiring "classic christmas music". Its pretty cool. Before I started writing, I had planned to write a whole rambling entry about this topic of getting older and feeling nostalgic, but now I dont know what to say. All right then, I return you to your regularly scheduled programs.

    Goodbye, Merry Cat
Today I had to put my Merry out of her misery. For the 2nd time in less than two years, she began vomiting persistently and continued to vomit even after she stopped eating. She nearly died of this illness in 2007 and this time, its been nearly 2 weeks now. She's lived 13 very good and productive years, and I can't prolong her suffering. I've been praying for God to do His will with Merry and that if this was her time, to take her in a way I can accept. So last night I bought the essential Now Christmas from walmart music downloads (they use a downloads manager now, and I believe its DRM free mp3's) to cheer myself up, then cried myself to sleep while I listened to it. I told God to take Merry to Heaven with him and to let my twin brother take care of her. And then I had a dream that reaffirmed to me that I'd made the right choice. I believe Merry definitely has a place in Heaven. I'm not yet emotionally ready to do any sort of tribute to Merry, but some day I will be. And I will do some sort of tribute to her, either in writing or podcast or both. or maybe in song... Some day...
